in Downtown Bozeman, Montana Nov 9-10, 2019.
This two-day seminar and demonstration is open to all interested professions – including LAc, DC, LMT, PT, and others. 15 PDA credits have been approved by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Other licensed professionals are responsible for respective continuing education credit approval.

Dr Arya Nielsen is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. She developed and directed the Acupuncture Fellowship for Inpatient Care at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Her research includes treatment of chronic pain in underserved populations, acupuncture therapies for acute care and the inpatient setting and both the physiology and therapeutic effect of the traditional East Asian healing technique Gua sha.

Gua sha is a traditional East Asian medical practice that reduces pain and inflammation and is immune protective. Relative to hundreds of years of its use, research only recently has illuminated the science behind the therapeutic effects of Gua sha and Ba guan (cupping): Therapeutic effects that cannot be produced with any other technique. Join the Montana Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine for this seminar on the science of Gua sha and its essential place in clinical practice including safety considerations.

For over 40 years Dr. Nielsen has been a leader in integrating acupuncture practice to the Western conventional setting both in terms of safety, standards of practice, policy and procedures and presentation of the research evidence-base. She is the author of the textbook Gua Sha, A Traditional Technique for Modern Practice. She developed and teaches a Gua sha Certification Course as well as courses on safe and ethical practice standards, evidence for acupuncture and traditional East Asian modalities, and inpatient hospital-based acupuncture therapy. Dr. Nielsen is the past Chair of the Policy Working Group and newly elected Board member of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health; the 75 North American member organization of academic medical centers and health systems that support the utilization of evidence-based nonpharmacologic therapies as integrative medical care.

Arya served on a 2014 Joint Commission Stakeholder Panel on the pain that supported their clarification (2015) and mandate (2018) that nonpharmacologic therapies be provided in hospital settings. Dr. Nielsen is a frequent peer reviewer for multiple medical journals. She can be contacted by email at
